In just over two decades the Centre Acanthes has become a revered symbol of contemporary composition. Launched at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 1977, it has since 1987 been linked to the Avignon Festival. Above all, the Centres Acanthes sets out to teach young musicians about contemporary music. Adopting an innovative approach, it centres its activities around leading modern composers, who each lead different sessions. The Centre Acanthes is held each July for a period of two to three weeks, in the magnificent fourteenth-century monastery, the Chartreuse, in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. Workshops are run by an entire team, as the guest composer is assisted by a group of musician-teachers, chosen by common accord to perform and analyse his works. Alongside the workshops, a series of concerts are held, at which the works of the guest composer hold pride of place, performed by the musician-teachers as well as ensembles or orchestras. These concerts are included in the official programme of the Avignon Festival. The Centre Acanthes is aimed at young music professionals, be they composers, performers, musicologists or teachers. They hail from all over the world - between half and three-quarters of the participants come from outside France. Participants are selected on the basis of their applications. Their numbers range from 80 to 120 every year. To make it easier for them to attend, over half of the participants are granted a bursary.

Exposition of New Music may also be described as a music-ecological festival. Its purpose is to extend the understanding of contemporary music movements and its historical roots and confront them with Czech musical tendencies. In the Czech context it represents a unique enterprise in its kind as well as its topical extent. The NME was introduced in the 1960s and established as an annual event in the 1990s in an attempt to help contemporary music followers to familiarise themselves in certain symptomatic trends and be able to evaluate different creative procedures. A brief overview of previous events: New pulsation (new approaches to rhythm in classical music - 1994), Teatromusica (music as theatre - 1995), Against the Stream (mavericks and outsiders - 1996), Chaos and Communication (scientific findings in art - 1997), Unexpected Encounters (search for new relationships - 1998), Apocalypse Now? (seers, prophets, utopians, and we-all - 1999), Czech Accent (Czech music emphasized - 2000), Spring glory (Rites of the Spring in the New Millenium - 2001), Roots in Rock (experimental development of former rock musicians - 2002)

Budapest Music Center (BMC) was established in 1996, and its main aim was to create a Hungarian music database on contemporary music, jazz and classical music which is available free to everyone through the Internet. In 2002 the database got a new structure, the information site was redesigned, and the content of the database is expanding countinuously. In the next few years BMC is going to develop a multimedia library where all records and scores of Hungarian contemporary compositions can be found.

Apart from the above non-profit activity of building an information site, BMC started its own record label in 1997. Since then BMC Records has released more than 80 contemporary, classical and jazz albums. The CD series hosts internationally recognized Hungarian composers/musicians like György Kurtág, Péter Eötvös, András Szollosy, Barnabás Dukay, Erich Bergel, János Starker, György Sebok, Tibor Varga, the Bartók String Quartet, András Keller, Márta Kurtág, Gábor Csalog, László Hadady, the Amadinda Percussion Group and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. BMC Records has several distributors all over the world, which also contributes to the promotion of Hungarian music.

The Centro para la Difusión de la Musica Contemporanes (CDMC) was founded in 1985 to fill the increasing gap in the dissemination of contemporary music and to create a more favourable atmosphere for new composition. It aims to help the understanding, enjoyment and study of contemporary music and put an end the isolation in which musical creation finds itself today.

The CDMC is a department of the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM), the performing arts division of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. It programmes and stages musical performances, encouraging total artistic freedom.

CDMC’s more specific aim is the study, examination and experimentation of new musical genres and trends, with a particular focus on Spanish composers. It is also involved in concert production and other musical performances, coproductions with music organisations, tours in Spain and abroad and the handling of definitive works by new Spanish writers, which are premičre by the CMCD.

- The CMCD is also involved in further activities, such as promotion, advertising, text editions, scores and recordings, and coordination with other production units subsidised by the INAEM. The head office of the CDMC has been based on the 5th floor of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia since 1987. One of the CDMC’s principal objectives was to provide a laboratory for computer-generated and electronic music (LIEM). The move to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía gave the CDMC a suitable location for the LIEM and, following the redesign of the building’s interior and in agreement with the INAEM, the equipment was installed. This has enabled the inclusion of an important branch of contemporary music, which had so far been neglected in Spain.

- The aims and activities of Laboratorio de Informática y Electrónica Musical de CDMC (LIEM-CDMC) include the composition of new works, the development of software for composition, the circulation of music, training, concert production and other musical events.

eNsemble of the Pro Arte Institute was formed in December 2000. It came into existence in order to cultivate in Russia a new understanding of the music of the 20th Century and new concert practices. Presently eNsemble is the only regular ensemble of contemporary music in St.Petersburg. The work of eNsemble moves in different directions: the classics of the XXth century, new young composers, post-avant-garde, remakes and transpositions of early music, intuitive music and unorthodox forms of concert discourse. Every month eNsemble prepares a new programme. eNsemble has also established an annual art-competition project "Delphic Games" - the competition for composers (in interpretation of poetic and artistic texts) and for instrumentalists (in interpretation of music texts).

New Music in Lüneburg a look into the 21st Century. „The 27th Festival Neue Musik Lüneburg, marked the beginning of a new area of contemporary music in Lüneburg. What in 1975 began as a weekend festival, rapidly grew into a series of concerts, workshops, seminars and courses which continue to gain recognition both nationally and internationally. The aim from the very beginning was not only to organise concerts, but to play an active role in furthering New Music. As a result of such thinking, the Fortbildungszentrum für Neue Musik, Lüneburg was founded in 1977, with the support of the Niedersächsische Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur. As the activities of the Center continued to be developed the Festival in Autumn was given an international counterpart in Spring, the Internationale Studienwoche für Zeitgenossische Musik. Furthermore the weekend seminars Neue Musik - Computermusik - Elektronische Musik - Live-Elektronik - Improvisation became a network of courses spread over the year. Its innovative system enabling people of all agegroups, who show interest in the subject, to join at any point during the year."Two years ago the Center was able to extend the alread varied analogue studios to move into the realm of digital technology, and the production of project work on compact disc, thanks to the generous support of the Niedersachsische Lottostiftung, das Land Niedersachsen, and the extended working area provided by Lüneburg town."Wide ranging work with children and young people, the promotion of up-and-coming professionals, project opportunities for performers and composers from Germany and abroad at the cutting edge of man/machine - this is our credo for the 21st Century, of which the recent 28th Festival Neue Music Lüneburg was an impressive example.

Gaudeamus Music-Theatre Festival 2004

May 9 15, 2004, the Netherlands

From May 9th until 15th Gaudeamus organizes the Gaudeamus Music-Theatre Festival 2004. The festival contains some of our own new productions, a conference and the presentation of some co-productions with the association of Dutch new music venues (VAMP) (see below). The festival shows the current state of small-scale music-theatre in The Netherlands. That the medium is beloved in and outside The Netherlands, was shown by the success of the Gaudeamus production "ONE" of Michel van de Aa, that is now programmed at international festivals as Berliner Festspiele and Festival d’Automne in Paris. More and more composers survey the possibilities to work with different disciplines. In this festival they get the possibility to show how divers the result of this can be. The compilations of these recent pieces, together with the conference supply an excellent view of the vitality of the Dutch music-theatre scene. The festival will start with a conference about de current state of small-scale music-theatre in The Netherlands at De Balie on Sunday May 9th. On the same night one of the productions will be performed at De Balie and from Monday until Saturday there will be a performance every night at the [NES] theaters, Frascati 1 or 2. The following productions will be involved:

1. Six and a half hours: a collaboration of Alison Isadora en Richard Huber (for actrice, ensemble, electronics and video)

2. Voyager: a mini chamber opera of Arnoud Noordegraaf (for voice, electronics and video)

3. De Dialoog: a new production of Edwin van der Heide (for voice, quadraphonic speaker and electronics).

4. Een Lied van Schijn en Wezen: a production of Gilius van Bergeijk (for electronics). Direction and visuals: Catharina Boon.

The Klangspuren Schwaz – Festival for Contemporary Music in Tirol

Klangspuren 2004

September 10 – 26, 2004

The Klangspuren Schwaz Festival (September 10 – 26, 2004) follows the same concept also in 2004: presenting new music from Austria while shedding a musical spotlight on other countries or regions. Europe is continuously growing together and we see it as a cultural responsibility to reflect these tendencies in our program. While the North was our focal point last year, the Klangspuren 2004 concentrate on the East – on Lithuania, Hungary and Slovenia. These countries will be represented by distinctive personalities from the areas of musical interpretation and composition. Detours to other directions are, like always, very welcome. This year, for example Vykintas Baltakas, one of Lithuania’s leading composers will present a variety of his works and at the same time also feature as a conductor. He will also feature in a talk with Vytautas Landsbergis, former president of Lithuania. With Peter Eötvös and György Kurtág some of the most important personalities in new music will join us from Hungary while Slovenia is represented by the composer and trombone player Vinko Globokar – another important player within the field of contemporary music. Globokar has influenced modern thinking with his society-oriented approach to composing since many years. These are only the highlights of this year’s program. Amongst other events rank an International Academy with the Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), readings and many interesting premieres. The ambitious and eclectic program again features the most versatile musicians and includes local tendencies and should leave much space for discussions, learning and getting to know each other, for discourse and understanding. The LGNM , the Luxembourg section of the International Society for Contemporary Music , was founded in 1983 by a handful of composers, performers, teachers and followers of contemporary music.

The aims of the LGNM are:

- to promote contemporary music, particularly that of Luxembourg;

- to organise concerts, conferences, workshops and events of any other kind designed to promote contemporary music;

- to develop exchanges and cooperation with national and international groups or organisations which pursue similar aims;

- to set up a documentation centre for Luxembourg contemporary music;

- to extend its activities to all fields having a direct relationship with these aims.

Since its inception, the LGNM has tried to pursue these objectives by organising a large number of events of various kinds:

- Classics of the 20th century: This is an annual festival devoted to composers who have left their mark on the 20th century.

- Symphony concerts: Since 1993, the 10th anniversary of the founding of the LGNM, special concerts have been given by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, with Marcel Wengler conducting.

- Exchange concerts: Since 1995 the LGNM has been able to intenify its contacts with foreign partners and hold exchange concerts in Israel, Japan, Denmark and Romania. In addition, ensembles and soloists are regularly invited to concerts of contemporary music in Luxembourg.

- Festivals of Luxembourgish music: The three festivals which the LGNM has organised were mainly intended to bring Luxembourgish composers more to the attention of the public.

- Dedicatory concerts: In this series, the concerts are centred around a celebrated composer who is invited for the occasion to Luxembourg. Several world premičres have thus seen the light of day, by Ivo Malec, Iannis Xenakis, Silvano Bussotti, Michael Tippett, Olivier Messsiaen, George Crumb, Maurice Ohana and Witold Lutoslawski.

- LGNM Editions: Whereas most Luxembourg composers either publish on their own account or have their works published by international publishing houses to which they are affiliated, LGNM Editions basically promote Luxembourgish music via compact disc. Amongst the 16 CDs published to date, is the Anthology of Luxembourgish Music, comprising some 22 symphonic works by 16 Luxembourgish composers.

- Luxembourg Sinfonietta: This ensemble, set up in 1999 with a view to the ISCM World Music Days 2000, is an ensemble which varies in function of the works programmed. It has a twofold aim: to make international contemporary music better known and to propagate the Luxembourgish music of our time.
